Leave's in Winter's GraspWinter had come quickly,
Fall didn't get a chance to say goodbye,
Yet the trees were still clothed.
Overnight this had settled here,
This Winter which took the world by suprise.
But I gathered my courage, and faced the winds,
I faced the snow, I faced the Winter around us.
I walked along a small path,
Down to the pond in the forest.
Though Winter had come and taken over,
Leaves I saw brustling on the trees.
And they fell, oh how they fell,
Beautiful, light, floating along;
And then I reached the lake,
Which had been iced over quickly in the rush of the cold.
And a fallen leaf,
So delicate as it rides the short bursts of wind,
Breaks the ice it falls on.
The water rushes up, drowing the leaf,
And all the others that have fallen around it.
So many leaves covered that ice;
One leaf broke it.
Why? This tiny leaf?
Which weighes not more than a feather,
How can it break the stronghold of a cold, thick wall of ice?
The ground around the pond floods,
Everything swallowed, dro
EasterRemember what you love,
you with sand in your teeth
and the feral burn of hunger
in your eyes.
God sends his regrets.
He made you grasping and slow,
in a late hour
when the wine washed low.
Remember what you love.
Fall to your knees in the toss
and the swell, quell
the appetite of the cold black sea.
Beg blessings for your home
and the salt-sick trees.
Reach what lies near:
the fat-faced child, the sweet-soft lamb;
tether the tantrum, trickle the blood.
Offer psalms to what is holy,
whisper the name of what you love
as it bobs in the bleak mad sea.
